Coworkers Step Up To Help Deaf Trader Joe’s Worker

A deaf worker at Trader Joe’s was having a hard time with everyone wearing face masks, but his coworkers helped him out. Matthew Simmons usually manages by reading the lips of customers at the Vancouver, Washington, store where he works part-time, but the face masks people are wearing because of the coronavirus were complicating his communication.

Luckily, his coworkers found three solutions to let customers know the situation. Someone gave Matthew a t-shirt that reads, “I am deaf. Please tap me on the shoulder for help.” Another gave him a white board to keep in his checkout line for customers to write down questions they may have. And store employees also wrote a message on the plexiglass window in front of his register informing customers that he’s deaf.

Now shoppers know that if he can’t see their mouth, he might not know what they’re saying and Simmons says these are making his job much easier and he’s thankful for his teammates. “Working together towards a common goal, breaking down barriers, showing compassion to one another instead of prejudices. That’s the best part,” he explains.
