The Shopping Embargo: My Annual, 8-Week Buying Fast
Andrea Tomkins as told to Alden Wicker
Click here to read the complete article
From the article:
"The shopping embargo is about buying only essentials—food, fuel, soap—and leaving out the rest. One of the first things I did was unsubscribe from all retail newsletters. They’re a great way to save money, but they’re also irresistible invitations to buy. I stopped going to the mall, and switched to grocery stores that only sold food.
I also started asking myself a series of questions before I brought something to the register:
Can I borrow one?
Can I buy it secondhand?
Can I reuse something I already have?
Will I get a lot of use out of this?
Can I wait a month before deciding to buy it?
We’re so used to whipping out our credit cards to buy something immediately–but when I waited a month, I could change my mind, find a better deal or decide I didn’t need it anymore.
It’s amazing how often I found myself with something in my hand, asking myself, “Do I really need this? The usual answer: No."...
PureWOW offers free newsletters with the latest technology to make your life easier. When I saw this one, I had to share. With my busy schedule, sometimes it is hard to get out to the store to look through all the different cards. This handy app brings the store to you and sends it automatically in time for the birthday or special event.
ARTICLE
In theory, we’d love to send each of our friends a personalized birthday card. But who has the time, or for that matter, who remembers?
Cleverbug does.
Essentially an iPhone app that syncs with your Facebook account, Cleverbug alerts you when your contacts’ birthdays are approaching, prompts you to create custom missives for folks you might ordinarily forget to buy a card for, and then prints and mails the cards in two to five business days so they arrive just in time for the big occasion.
To send a card ($3, plus postage), pick a lucky recipient from a drop-down list and choose from a host of designs. Cleverbug pre-populates the cards with photos from your Facebook albums, but you can change the images to just about anything. You can also edit the language, should your carefully crafted haiku prove better than a generic “Happy 40th!”
You don’t even need to dig up your address book to get the card mailed: Upon sign-up, Cleverbug aggregates birthdays in date order and automatically requests updated addresses from your contacts (which it stores for future use).
That said, you can certainly send cards for non-birthday events as well: new job, new baby, new Botox.
Worried because your mother isn’t on “the Facebook”?
We discovered that if you simply select a friend who is, you can change the photo and mailing address to reflect anyone you know.
From Learnvest:
Healthy, progressive, and economically responsible, the Treat Jar is a surefire way to celebrate a major accomplishment without breaking the bank.
Here’s how you play: Grab a girlfriend and take a night to think of all the (ideally inexpensive) things you’ve always wanted to try but have never managed to get around to.
Wine tasting, fencing lessons, a Pilates class, making ravioli from scratch, taste-testing the mousse at that new bakery on the corner, painting your nails gold, unapologetically watching every season of Downton Abbey in your pajamas, whatever.
Give yourself a variety of options—from simple to intricate—and write each one down on little paper rectangles, concealing the celebratory contents with a swift and solid crease.
Drop them all into an oversized mason jar, and promptly display it on the counter, on a shelf, on your bedside table—anywhere that’s visible daily and that keeps you accountable to setting and crushing your goals.
Then, every time you have something to celebrate, close your eyes and reach into the jar like you’re eight years old at a sleepover and it’s finally your turn at Charades. Discover the fate of your reward, and set out on your adventure!
